Introduction
The world is now undergoing an unprecedented urbanization especially in the fast transition countries such as China. The past three decades have seen China’s urban population increased from 18% in 1978 to 52.6% in 2012. The pace, depth, and magnitude of these changes, while bringing about benefits to local people and global economy, have exerted severe ecological stresses on both local human living conditions and regional life support system. Faced by the ever increasing environmental challenge of urban flooding, heat island effects, foggy atmosphere etc., a new vision and new path of ecologically sound urbanization in both engineering and management is badly needed.
To this end, an innovative transition of urban infrastructure from traditional one to green and ecological infrastructure and the required scientific and strategic planning, construction and management have been studied and implemented worldwide. Urban ecological infrastructure in China for example, includes urban wetland (city kidney), green land (city lung), porous ground surface (city skin), degradable of wastes outlets (city mouth), transportation canals and rivers (city artery).
To contribute to the discourse of New Urbanization, the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the International Council on Ecopolis Development jointly organize the International Ecopolis Summit on “Urban Ecological Infrastructure for New Urbanization: Engineering and Management”. The Summit will be held in Beijing, China, November 28-29, 2013. With the presence of well-known international and Chinese scientists, researchers and engineers, representatives of government agencies, international organizations and enterprises, the Summit aims to review and discuss systematically engineering and technologies available for urban ecological infrastructure, to contribute to the development of urban ecological engineering science theories and methods, to provide scientific knowledge on the prevention and control of urban water pollution, haze, heat island effect, soil pollution and bio-diversity decline, etc. The Summit will last two days to give enough room for keynote speeches, presentations, discussions and networking on the first day and a study tour on the second day.
Academic abstracts are invited to present research findings on the following and related issues:
l The planning and management of urban ecological infrastructure
l Ecological construction of green land and wetlands
l Ecological engineering for vitalizing urban surface
l Engineering for recirculation of pollution discharge outlets
The Acta Ecological Sinica will publish a special issue for the Summit and some will be recommended to International SCI Journals for publication after peer review.
