Hans van Ginkel was Under Secretary-General of the United Nations and Rector of the United Nations University, Tokyo, from 1997 to 2007 and the Rector Magnificus of Utrecht University, the Netherlands from 1986 to 1997. In 1980 he was appointed a full professor of Human Geography and Planning in Utrecht University and from 1980 to 1985 he served as Dean of the Faculty of Geography and Planning.

He was a member of the Social Sciences Council of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences and the Arts (KNAW), and is a member of the Academia Europea and associate fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS).
