Nov.27-30, 2011
Yixing, Jiangsu, China
Background
With the aims and objectives of promoting and guiding the development of environmental science and technology, Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) is currently deepening its cooperation with many partners such as UNESCO, UNEP, IUCN, Elsevier, and Zhongyu Environmental Technology Corporation.
In 2010, SCOPE and Zhongyu Environmental Technology Corporation jointly established the SCOPE-Zhongyu Environmental Awards (Life Achievement Awards on Environmental Sciences, and Young Scientist Awards on Environmental Issues). The SCOPE‐Zhongyu Environmental Awards is a 10‐year programme that recognizes and encourages outstanding scientists who contribute to the improvement of the world environment through promotion of environmental sciences and technological advances. It aims to sustain and guide the development of environmental science and technology, and to foster cooperation in environmental protection and management strategies. The awards have been granted on a biennial/annual basis, and the first ceremony was held in shanghai, 2010. In 2011, the two parties will organize and convene the SCOPE-Zhongyu Environmental Forum on a yearly basis.
For four decades, the UNESCO programme “Man and the Biosphere” (MAB) is exploring ways of sustainably using the environment. The MAB programme encompasses a global network of representative model regions for sustainable development. MAB demonstrates strategies and concrete solutions for the sustainable use of biodiversity and ecosystem services. It is time to discuss the achievements and the potential of biosphere reserves on the 40 years anniversary of MAB now, with a view to agreeing on further courses of action.
SCOPE and Elsevier partner to publish Environmental Development, to be launched in 2012. Prof. Theo Beckers is nominated as editor-in-chief, Prof. Yonglong Lu and Prof. John P. Giesy are the associate editors, and 40 internationally known scientists serve on the editorial board. Environmental Development, the new journal, is a forum for transnational communication, discussion and global action that publishes peer-reviewed articles to stimulate the exchange and linking of traditional scientific knowledge on the environment with the experiential knowledge and know-how among decision makers and other stakeholders. It is designed to provide a pro-active, authoritative source of information for researchers, postgraduate students, policymakers, and managers, to bridge the gap between fundamental research and application in management and policy practices, and to reduce the delay between research and publication. It seeks to draw together natural sciences and social and behavioral sciences, to strengthen the collaboration between the developed and developing world, and to link environmental research to the broader issues of economic and social-cultural developments.
It is urgent to convene all the partners to identify the frontiers of environmental sciences, to review the progress, and to discuss on the future action.
