Mr. K.K. Yoganaadan, ChargéD'Affaires of the Sri Lanka Embassy in China, visited the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES), Chinse Academy of Sciences (CAS) on October 12, 2020, to strengthen the cooperation of science, technology and education between China and Sri Lanka in the future. Mr. Jiang Yiqi, Deputy Director, Division of Asian and African Affairs, Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS, and Mr. Xie Yong, Director, Department of the International Cooperation, University of CAS, attended the meeting, as well as representatives from South China Sea Institute of Oceanology (SCSIO), Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR), CAS, Beijing Center for Diseases Prevention and Control(CDC), Peking University First Hospital, OBOR Environmental Technology Alliance, and Lihero Co., Jingrun Co., Tidelion Co. participated.
The workshop was chaired by Prof. Yang Min, Deputy Director General of RCEES, CAS. Dr. Liu Juan, Director of International Cooperation Office of RCEES, briefly introduced the history and current situation of RCEES, Prof. Wei Yuansong reported the construction process of the China-Sri Lanka Joint Center for Water Technology Research and Demonstration (hereinafter referred to as the China-Sri Lanka Water Center), and showed a video introduction of water technology cooperation between China and Sri Lanka. Jiang Yiqi introduced the composition and function orientation of CAS, and expressed the vision and expectation that the China- Sri Lanka Water Center should be developed into an important national research institution in Sri Lanka. The two parties mainly exchanged opinions on collaboration progress and the following action plan on construction of China-Sri Lanka Water Center, marine climate and disaster forecast, causes studies of CKDu (Chronic Kidney Disease with unknown etiology), and safe drinking water supply.
Mr. Yoganaadan expressed gratitude for the support from China and highly praised the wonderful work done by CAS in carrying out the Joint Statement of the two governments. He pointed out that the new Sri Lankan government pays more important attention to development of science, technology and education. China's achievements in water pollution control, safe drinking water supply, rural living environment, and air pollution control provide a good example and reference for Sri Lanka. He hopes to strengthen cooperation with China, and the Embassy of Sri Lanka in China will fully support China-Sri Lanka scientific and technological cooperation, as well as the future development of the China-Sri Lanka Water Center.
