Dr. Pu WANG from the State Key Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology (SKLECE), Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (RCEES, CAS) took part in the 28th Chinese Antarctic Scientific Expedition and has arrived at China Great Wall Station in Antarctica on December 13, 2011. He will carry out the investigation on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Polar Regions entitled “Study on the multi-media distribution and fate of persistent organic pollutants in Antarctic area”.
Considering the research work during the 26th and 27th Antarctic expedition, the air sampling will be continuously processed for long-term monitoring on POPs in the polar regions, and many other environment samples will also be collected, e.g. lake water, sea water, snow, ice, to study the multi-media distribution and exchange flux of POPs between the adjacent environmental components in the King George Island, which will provide important information on the influence and potential risk exposure of POPs to the local environment, and are of benefit to the environmental protection in Antarctica.
RCEES has consecutively attended the Chinese Antarctic Scientific Expedition twice, and focused on the POPs in the polar environment. This objective during 28th Antarctic expedition is as an extensive research work to the pervious study. In the future, SKLECE will consecutively dispatch research staffs in annual expedition to sustain the Antarctic POPs research in the long term.
