Dr.  Lv Yonglong, researcher from Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was elected the first Vice President of Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) at its 13th General Assembly held in London.

Lv was elected by a unanimous vote. His term will start 2009 and end in 2012.

SCOPE was created by the 10th meeting of the Executive Committee of International Council for Science (ICSU) in 1969. It is a worldwide network to guide and develop scientific programs on environmental problems, consisting of 40 national science academies and research councils, 22 international scientific unions, committees and societies.

SCOPE offers interdisciplinary reviews of existing and potential environmental problems, and has become a recognized authority at the interface between the science and decision-making spheres.

China became one of its members in 1988. Six scientists from mainland China have joined the scientific committee in the last 20 years.
