Zhiyun Ouyang is a professor of ecology, and the director of the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is the president of the Ecological Society of China, and the vice-president of the Ecological Economic Society of China. His research focuses on ecosystem assessment, ecosystem services, ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation. Professor Ouyang is a well established national leader in the area of ecosystem assessment and restoration, and biodiversity conservation, and has played an active role in conservation policy innovation in China since 2000. His research is notable for its profound influence on, and broad applications to policy making for ecosystem conservation, restoration and land management from local to national scales in China. Examples at the national scale include China’s national ecosystem survey and assessment, mainstreaming ecosystem services in national key ecological functional area identification, national park network planning, giant panda protection, and the national financial mechanisms for natural conservation. At the local scale, His research has been used to inform decision making in cities such as Beijing and Shenzhen for better biodiversity protection and ecosystem restoration through urban ecological planning and management. He has published 11 books and more than 170 peer-reviewed international journal articles (including 13 papers published on Science, PNAS and Nature series), and more than 370 peer-reviewed papers in Chinese Journals.
