With the process of social and economic development, natural resources, environment, and ecosystem of China are faced with threat. The connotation of national security has been changed and expanded. Based on the national demand and public concerns on ecology and health security, the Department of Environmental Biotechnology (DEB) mainly investigate the effect of environmental pollutants on life and health in various biological systems and explore innovative biochemical methods to reduce or remedy damages caused by these environmental pollutants.

The mission and objectives are:

1. to examine the toxicity of environmental pollutants in various biological systems, especially to understand the molecular mechanisms of the toxicity induced by complex environmental pollutants;
2. to conduct the ecological risk assessment of pollutants based on toxicological measurements;
3. to develop novel environmental microbiology technologies;
4. to detect the pesticide residues and investigate the mechanism of toxicity;
5. to conduct the research and development of environmentally friendly products;
6. to develop innovative technologies for biomass recycling.
